Therapy and "Soul-Searching"

"Each of us has a truth as unique as our own fingerprints.
Without knowing that truth, without speaking it aloud,
we cannot know who we are and that we are already whole...
simply speaking the truth heals." —Naomi Rachel Remen

There is in all of us a deeply human longing to be known. To have a place where our potential and our strengths are seen, along with our fears and wounds. Good therapy provides such a place.

I am profoundly grateful for the privilege of being invited into my clients' lives. Exploring the richness and pain that lie beneath the veneers we construct to protect ourselves. Witnessing real courage, as clients name wounds and truths that have shaped their lives. Building trust, which is sacred and needed by all of us. Uncovering hidden strengths and resources. Sharing humor and perspective. Finding joy in transformative growth and healing. Exploring new possibilities and unleashing the potential of the "true self."

I believe there is a spiritual dimension to all of our lives, acknowledged or not, that helps us find our way to greater love, creativity and compassion. There is a sacred core to who we are as human beings—a center that sustains us when all else falls away. And this core connects us to the larger "beloved community" of brothers and sisters who share the same needs that are fundamental to all of us.

I have learned many truths from my decades of working as a therapist: That our humanity is determined by the choices we make, not by what happens to us. That it is possible to experience joy even in the midst of suffering. That life is too precious to waste on the petty. That nothing matters more than human love and connection. That love really does conquer fear, and healing radiates out to help repair the world we share in common.

"There is but one cause of human failure.
And that is the lack of faith in one's true Self."
—William James
